UFO

or

NOT A UFO

.

THAT BE THE QUESTION

for anyone still behind the wave:

I was in Windsor (Invercargill) practising composition with my camera when I took this snap of the steeple. Look a bit to the right of the crossy bit atop the point and you’ll see an annoying dot …

dot by steeple

that I didn’t notice when snapping. I did when checking on screen later, so I expanded the dot lots, in stages, and decided that there was a lot to that dot.

I THEN USED iPHOTO

and further blew it up out of all proportion to common sense just to see what might happen and got this lot—make of it what you will:

snap

ANYWAY

the laconic reply from the professionals is herewith in full:

” … I believe it’s very likely a small bird in flight > the white ‘motion’ being the underneath of the birds actual wing [reflection of the sun] … ”

—and there’s no way I have the credentials to doubt their conclusion.

coming in

The UFO NZ lady later got back to me with apologies for being a wee bit tardy.

SO HERE I’M

revisiting some of the shots I posted earlier. Please note that all I did was blow them up hugely, immensely, ridiculously, to see what might happen.

AS FOR THIS LAST

I’m damned if I can remember what I did or how I got that with those patterns (‘d be useless as an analyst, I tell you) but quite pretty nonetheless. (Please disregard that arrow-pointer, an artefact of my carelessness when screen-shotting.)

on a wing

Again, make of it what you will.

ANYWAY

I guess that lays that one to rest and I must admit to being just a wee bit disappointed. Okay, I never did expect little green men but something inexplixcable would have appealed to my over-developed senses of the Mysterious. Bummer~!

AND JUST TO CHEER YOU UP

here ’tis again, straight from the expert’s keys:

I believe it’s very likely a small bird in flight > the white ‘motion’ being the underneath of the birds actual wing [reflection of the sun].

—make of it what you will.

  1. I just can’t help myself—briefly I ranged along the lines of “… coming in, on a wing and a prayer …” as per the WW2 flying song, but gave it away.

    1. Before I lay this thing to rest I’ll have another fiddle or two with the shots, see if I can persuade anything else out of the woodwork. But yes, the glow effect (Suzanne of the UFONZ folks described it in one of her early correspondences as a ‘misty’ effect) is above.

To produce such a ‘shape’ above the putative bird would surely require the wings to meet overhead—? I know birds can flap like fury, especially when braking for a landing, but to actually meet?

I also don’t know what produced the patterns of lines in the blue background of the sky (or how the hell I got them). But I still have the original; on screen we see it only at 72 dots per inch. Perhaps the tech guy could see it in much greater detail—I don’t know.

I have to go into town today, get a replacement door lock for the bathroom (old one chewed out) but will play with the snap later and post larger images.
